Description:
A scarce mid seventeenth century theological and social treatise, first published in 1645 and here enlarged in the second edition. Torshell, chaplain to the household of Princess Elizabeth, daughter of Charles I, develops a learned defence of women within a firmly Protestant moral framework. Drawing on scripture and classical exempla he argues for the intellectual and spiritual capacities of women while emphasising piety and virtue as their true glory. Particularly interesting for its early interest in the progress of women.
Samuel Torshell (1604-1650) started his career as a preacher in London and by 1632 he became rector of Banbury in Cheshire.
Condition:
Fair Condition. Full bound in 20th century faux leather with gilt titles and date to spine. Page ii (contents page 1) is absent but otherwise the book is complete. Contents page iii & iiii are slightly cropped at gutter. Cracking to front and rear hinge causing gathering L to the rear to be loose. Markings to title page. Pages are tanned. Boards are clean with slight creasing to spine edges.
