Description:
A popular illustrated eighteenth century edition of Francis Quarles's highly influential religious emblem books, combining moral verse with intricate, symbolic engravings.
With 94 illustrated plates, 13 of which have been handcoloured. Research suggests this is the 1701 edition of Quarles's Emblemes - date of 1632 on the binding and handwritten title page is wrong this is the 1701 edition published by William Freeman (Estc No. T94279). A Really lovely book in a wonderful 18th century gilt tooled leather binding. Each emblem in the collection follows a structured format: a biblical citation is paired with a striking visual image, followed by a poetic paraphrase by Francis Quarles. Condition:
Good Condition. Red leather binding with gilt tooling to both boards and gilt ruling to spine. Title page is absent but a handwritten title page is present. Gilt turn ins and edges. Pagination is correct (8) p.310 (5) p.322-381 though the final page (p.381) is absent. Tear and loss to top edge of leaf 379/380. Exlibris plate of Mathew Arnold and his pen inscription to front end paper (not believed to be the poet). Contents otherwise are good with light tanning. Boards are good with some rubbing to edges, especially to top edge and spine tails.
