A comprehensive series of travelogues complied by W. Adams. Synthesising the observations of explorers, diplomats, missionaries, merchants, and earlier travel writers in four volumes.

Adams compiled various travel accounts from four continents: Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Many passages are condensed from well-known travellers such as Alexander von Humboldt, John Lewis Burckhardt, and George Annesley. Most of the work is centred around the inhabitants of these areas, with coloured plates highlighting their costumes, weapons, and social class. Notable plates include a shopkeeper from New York, Ashantee costumes, Canadian peasants, and the peasantry of Europe. Each volume features a pull-out map as the frontispiece & hand coloured plates. Four volumes, complete.

Good Condition. 4 volumes in half calf with gilt titles to spine. Binding are firm. Contents are tanned and foxed with occasional marking. Maps are some closed tears with creasing to edges and marked with foxing, more notable tear to map of Asia. Previous owner inscription to front end paper dated 1840. Boards have some moderate wear with notable shelf wear to boards. Bumping to edges with scuffing. Small split to spine edge of Vol.3 with more notable split to spine tail of vol.4.
