A scarce privately issued edition of Wilde’s celebrated society comedy, first performed at St James’s Theatre in 1892 and widely regarded as his first major theatrical success. This 1903 issue was produced in a limited edition of two hundred and fifty copies by the London publisher and bookseller Leonard Smithers, and is generally considered an unauthorised or pirated edition, printed shortly after Wilde’s death. It is left unnumbered and is out of series.
Condition:
Good Condition. Brown cloth with gilt titles to spine. Exlibris plate of Walter M. Coutts to front pastedown. Binding is firm and pages are lightly tanned. Some pages uncut. Boards have moderate edge-wear with some bumping to corners. Some staining to front and rear board edges. Light tanning to spine.
