A Select Collection of Old Plays, edited by R. Dodsley

1744. First Edition of Dodley's Old Plays, a large collection of tragedies, comedies, and histories streching from the early mystery plays to Jacobean period. Volume includes Marlowe's Edward II and Kyd's Spanish Tradegy. Contains 56 plays in total. First 10 volumes were published first, volume 11 was printed later in the same year of 1744. Surprisingly there is no appearance of Shakespeare, perhaps because he was so widely in print in the mid 18th century and Dodsley wished to focus on lesser known workos of the time. Good/Fair Condition. 11 Volumes in full calf binding with gilt tooling to spine. First two volume's front board is detached but present. Kirkleatham library & Brocket Hall Library plate to front pastedowns. Occasional Panhanger amorial plate to front free end paper. Pages are lightly tanned and foxed. Bindings have moderate edge-wear with some notable peeling to edges and spine ends. Volume 2 has more notable fading to spine with half the lettering plate absent.
