Written while imprisoned in the Tower of London, Raleigh's vast historical work attempted nothing less than a universal history, from the Creation through to the Roman Empire. Its ambitious scope, eloquent style and moral reflections secured its reputation as one of the great intellectual undertakings of the early modern period. 

Very Good Condition. Full calf with gilt titles to spine. Binding is firm and pages are lightly tanned and foxed. Illustrated frontis. Boards are clean with minimal wear. Contemporay 20th century binding.
