Bibliomania; or Book-Madness; A Bibliographical Romance

Thomas Frognall Dibdin

1876

Chatto & Windus

Large 8vo

Description:

This work by the clergyman and bibliographer Thomas Frognall Dibdin serves as both a history of book collecting and a satirical critique of the obsessive pursuit of rare volumes. Written in the form of a dialogue, the text identifies "bibliomania" as a fictionalised disease, detailing its symptoms such as a passion for uncut edges, vellum copies, or first editions whilst providing an extensive chronicle of famous libraries and collectors. This 1876 edition, produced in a large octavo format, is a later nineteenth-century reprint of the expanded 1842 version, featuring the original woodcut illustrations and additional memoirs of the author. It stands as a seminal text in the field of book-collecting literature. Please Read Condition Report.

Condition:

Good/Fair Condition. Bound in Contemporary quarter leather binding with marble paper covered boards and new end papers. Top-edge gilt. Importantly this edition, like all others, were printed on wood-pulp paper and as such it is very frail with age. Thus there is some tearing to bottom edge of pages and notable chipping to pages edges etc. Notable tear to page 575. Professional repairs to half title and index pages. Stamping to title page. Otherwise no text is affected and pages are clean with browning. Boards are clean with minimal wear, slight chipping to spine head.
