This very scarce work presents an English translation by Sir John Bowring of Faazin Gei, a classic Chinese romance written in the late ming era. The narrative explores the themes of romantic devotion and duty through the story of two lovers navigating societal expectations in imperial China. Bowring was the former 4th Governor of Hong Kong, he accompanied his translation with extensive notes and an introduction intended to provide Victorian readers with insights into Chinese social customs and literary traditions. The publication reflects the mid nineteenth century British effort to translate Eastern literature for a Western academic and general audience. To front end paper appears to written 'Algernon C Bowring, Easter 1874', a potential relative of the translator, a potential association copy

Very Good Condition. Green cloth with gilt titles to spine. Pen inscription of 'Algernon C. Bowring, Easter 1874' to front free end paper (a potential association copy). Binding is firm and contents are clean. Boards have light wear with small white marking to front board and light fraying to spine ends.
