Description:

'London, A Pilgrimage' emerged as a partnership between the French artist Gustave Dore and the English journalist Blanchard Jerrold. Rather than producing a conventional guidebook, the creators set out to capture the immense scale, energy, and social stratification of the 19th century metropolis. Dore spent time wandering the streets of London, sketching diverse scenes ranging from the opulent crowds at the Derby to the destitute quarters of the East End. Dore captures the beautiful, gothic darkness of the city.

Condition:

Good Condition. Publisher's pictorial cloth boards. Spine has been professionally rebacked with gilt titles to spine. Boards have also been professionally re-cornered and repaired. All plates present. Contemporary gift inscription to inside front board. Binding is firm. Contents are tanned to edges with occasional nicks to edges. Marking to front end paper. Tissue guard facing plate on p.188 is absent. Boards have some moderate edge and shelf-wear. Light mark to front board bottom left corner. General marking to boards. Light fraying to upper-board fore-edge.
