Realist masterpiece. Published in the same year as the first edition. Flaubert's novel was banned after its serialisation in 1856, but Flaubert was acquitted and the first, second and third edition followed in 1857. Rare 3rd edition.
Condition:
Good/Fair Condition. Full contemporary calf with gilt tooling to spine. Marble edges. Front end paper to frontis is slightly loose. Pen inscription to front end paper and blue pen marginalia to p.1-5 and occasional light pen marking throughout. Moderate wear to boards with rubbings to edges and bumping to corners. Light peeling to leather on edges. Marking to spine with some light tanning. Text is in French.
