Originally published in Paris in 1825, the first English edition was published 12 years later and translated by American Thomas C. Hartshorn. His translation of Deleuze's work on Animal Magnetism is credited for helping to massively expand the subject in America. Animal magnetism, also known as mesmerism, is a historical belief system proposed by the German physician Franz Mesmer in the late eighteenth century. Mesmer argued that an invisible, natural force flowed through all living bodies, and that disruptions or blockages in this fluid caused physical and mental illnesses.
