The Eternal Husband and Other Stories

£135.00

First Edition of the acclaimed Constance Garnett translation published in 1917 by William Heinemann. An important early translation. Included here are 3 novellas by Dostoevsky, The Eternal Husband, The Double, and A Gentle Spirit. They bring together some of Dostoevsky’s most concentrated psychological fiction. The Eternal Husband is a tense study of jealousy, humiliation, and moral cruelty between two men bound by a shared past. This first edition was cheaply produced to conform to prevailing wartime economy standards.

Fair Condition. Red cloth with dark lettering to spine. Binding is firm and pages are aged brown with a notable tan and fox. Neat previous owner inscription to front free end paper dated 1917. Small dent to fore-edge. Occasional dog-earred corners. Boards have a notable edge-wear with bumping to corners and fraying to spine ends and edges. Notable crease to front board's top right along with some heavy marking and stain to the edge of the front board.
