Description:
Inscribed by the author to the front free end paper. Laffan’s book grew out of the lectures he gave in the early months of 1917 to the scattered companies of the Army Service Corps (Motor Transport) attached to the Serbian army during the First World War. The survey runs from the medieval Serbian Empire through the centuries of Ottoman rule. The title borrows a phrase applied to the Serbs, whose country he describes as one of the gateways of civilised Europe. Rare.
