The History of the Renowned Prince Arthur, King of Britain
Thomas Malory
1816
Walker and Edwards et al
First Edition Thus
32mo, 7.5 x 13 cms
Description:
The work was first printed in 1485 by William Caxton, with subsequent early editions appearing in 1498, 1529, 1557, and 1634. All pre-Restoration printings are virtually unobtainable today. This 1816 publication marked the first revival of Thomas Malory's text since the 1634 edition and proved responsible for sparking the later Victorian obsession with revitalising the national figure of King Arthur, an influence visible in Alfred Tennyson's "Idylls of the King" and Algernon Charles Swinburne's "The Tale of Balen". Gathering the legendary tales of the Knights of the Round Table, the quest for the Holy Grail, and the ultimate fall of Camelot, the text preserves the foundational mythos of British chivalric tradition. Modern reader's with know the title better as Le Morte d'Arthur. 2 Volumes both have lovely engraved title pages. Later, early 20th century calf binding.
Condition:
Very Good Condition. 20th century calf binding with gilt ruling to spine and title. Engraved title pages. Binding is firm and contents are lightly tanned with occasional minor spotting. Marble edges. Neat previous owner inscription to front end paper of V2 and Rear end paper of V1 dated December 1972. Boards have some rubbing to edges with minor peeling. Light tanning to spine.
