A long, witty, and characteristically provocative attempt to explain economic and political systems to an educated lay reader, framed as a letter to an imagined “intelligent woman.” Shaw wrote it at a time when socialism was a lively public issue in Britain. He had been one of the founders of the Fabian Society, a gradualist socialist group advocating reform through democratic means rather than revolution.
