The Professor and The Poems of Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell
[Charlotte Bronte]
1883
Smith, Elder, & Co.,
Small 8vo
Charlotte Brontë’s first completed novel first published in 1857 and here printed in 1883. The Professor follows the reserved and ambitious William Crimsworth as he leaves England to teach at a boys’ school in Brussels, navigating work, love, and self-definition abroad. Drawing on Brontë’s own experiences in Belgium, it offers an early exploration of themes she later developed more fully in Jane Eyre. Also included is The Poems of the Brontës, gathering the poetry of Charlotte, Emily & Anne. The poems range from Charlotte’s reflective and moral pieces to Anne’s compassionate, socially attuned verses, and Emily’s visionary, elemental lyrics that reveal the imaginative world behind Wuthering Heights.
Fair Condition. Half Bound in brown calf with marble paper covered boards. Marbled edges and end papers. Newspaper trimming tipped-in to rear end paper. Binding is firm and pages are tanned. Notable crack to gutter along title page casuing some tearing to title page. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and peeling along edges. Spine is tanned and small label to mid-spine. Pen marking to front end papers and title page.
