Longfellow drew on the Ojibwe legends collected by the Indian agent Henry Rowe Schoolcraft, and took the name Hiawatha from Iroquois tradition. Rare.

Fair/Good Condition. Publisher's cloth with gilt titles to spine. Previous owner inscription to front end paper dated 1856. Binding is firm. Contents are good with minor spotting and tanning. Ads to rear. Boards have wear notable split to rear board and spine joint. Loss to cloth on spine head.
