1810. James Montgomery was a Scottish poet and dedicated social reformer whose writing was deeply informed by humanitarian and abolitionist beliefs. His poem featured here, “The West Indies,” is a clear abolitionist piece that combines lyrical precision with a strong moral stance. In it, Montgomery traces the course of colonialism from Europe’s early exploitation of the Americas to the British Empire’s abolition of the transatlantic slave trade in 1807.

Good Condition. Full tree-marbled calf binding. Previous owner inscription to front free end paper. Binding is firm. Pages are lightly tanned. Boards have moderate edge-wear with some peeling to edges. Front board and spine joint has notable peeling. Lettering plate to spine is peeling.
